The Setting of Genofunk

Your story begins in a perfect world, forced to begin anew. Will humankind become a feral beast, ready to tear itself apart over the last resources— or will something Wonderful happen? The choice of how to continue this story about human decline and fairytale wonder is up to you.

You as players get to answer this question, as you watch your Characters go down their own personal sunset boulevard and acquire ever more power over the fate of humanity. You will become the hand that shapes it.

The Dying Heroes

The protagonists of this story are the victims of a modern malady, the Sewer-Sterling Syndrome. "Se.S" for short, it affects fetuses in the womb and is one of the very few illnesses that humankind has failed to eradicate— a prionic disease that violently mutates the victim's DNA.

Modern medicine may not have eradicated it, but it has made the disease innocuous. All it takes is a little pill, one Corporations freely distribute to the affected.

And so, like any other human being on Earth, your Characters have lived on in the apex of transhumanism... Until the Event crushed their every dream.

The drugs can't be produced without electricity, and of course our future heroes only have access to what little stash they had before the Flare. The symptoms are starting to show.

But everything changes when one morning, at dawn, a strange fellow comes to their door. Blind, black and overweight, riding a rickety cart full of knick-knacks and pulled by a mule: he introduces himself as Mr. Wonder.

Thus begins our Heroes' journey, as they look for resources as well as answers. Their benefactor provides them with food and clothing, free of charge, as well as an item from a long-bygone past: a crystal radio set.

Mr. Wonder explains how to use it— and incredibly, it works! A radio signal, music coming through the headset. It means that somewhere out there, there is electricity... Somewhere out there, there is hope!

And so off the Characters go, walking the Golden Road in search of the signal's source.
